I have had it on my long list of things to do to write an article about this important topic. Seems like Julie just beat me to it!

Image harvesting is copying and pasting an image from someone’s website and putting it on their own. Not Cool

Hot linking is linking to the image located on another website so that it appears on your own site. Not Cool

Please read Julie’s excellent article here. and her second article here.

Just a small word about the free demo buttons and such that I make available to everyone…

These are free indeed, and please feel free to download them and use them on your blogs without asking. What I do ask is that everyone please download the buttons and upload them on your own blogs. That is the correct way of using these free buttons. Please do not hot link them to your blogs. You’ll be stealing bandwidth from my blog host.

Thanks, Julie, for the awesome explanation! I couldn’t have said it better!

Here are a few dos and don’ts for bloggers:

Q- Do I need to ask permission to post another person’s art on my blog?
A- Depends. It is common courtesy to let them know you’d like to post one of their creations on your blog. It is understood in the stamping blogging community that when you use a creation made by another stamper on your blog, that you link back to the blog of the original designer. The reason for this is two-fold. It gives complete credit to the designer and gives the reader the option to visit the blog of the original artist. As you can see, those who don’t want their readers visiting another blog and leaving theirs will not want to post other stamper’s art.

Q- Do I have to ask first before I link to someone else’s blog in my favorites?
A- No. It is not required. However, asking another blogger to link exchange is a different matter. A "link exchange" is when you ask another blogger to link to you if you will link to them. Rule of thumb here is to only ask bloggers who you are friends with to link exchange and don’t assume they will say "yes". Some bloggers are blogging to promote another company’s products and may not want to link to someone promoting their competition.

Some bloggers decide to put music on their blog. If you are blogging mainly for yourself and not for others, I see nothing wrong with that.

However, from a business perspective, music on a blog is not a very saavy move. Not everyone likes your taste in music. Not everyone wants the "noise" upon visiting (wakes the baby, etc.).

People are more likely to leave your blog if you have music.

Check out this thread at SCS all about music on blogs:
Why Blog Music?
